Abstract

A multidisciplinary project was undertaken in Sassenheim, The Netherlands, to combat the widespread use of tranquilizers for sedative and soporific purposes. A task force was formed comprising the four family physicians, the pharmacist, and representatives from nursing, social work, and mental health disciplines. The task force defined proper and improper tranquilizer use, investigated the extent of misuse, determined goals, and implemented an educational program to achieve those goals. For those troubled with insomnia, sleep courses were organized, which taught people techniques that promoted relaxation and sleep. The result was that the usage of tranquilizers was sharply reduced, with physicians and patients seeking alternative ways to deal with anxiety and insomnia.
