Across the country, the conversion of nonprofit hospitals and health insurance plans to for-profit status is resulting in the creation of new philanthropic foundations. The preservation of these assets--and their continued use for public benefit--is required by law. This issue of States of Health discusses an additional challenge facing consumers and communities: ensuring that these assets are most effectively used to promote community health.
