Familial hypercholesterolemia is one of the most frequent genetic disorders. The increased cholesterol levels in the plasma low-density lipoprotein fraction due to the diminished number or absence of LDL receptors predispose affected individuals to premature atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.
