Lemierre syndrome is septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein caused typically by an oropharyngeal infection. Lemierre syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of septic emboli and sepsis, especially in a patient with tenderness along the sternomastoid muscle.
