The transition from using "PACS administrators" situated in the radiology department, to that of placing enterprise-wide-functioning imaging management professionals outside it, is gradually moving forward nationwide. Most hospitals and health systems are shifting radiology department-based imaging management professionals into corporate IS, but a small number are implementing PACS and starting out with enterprise-wide managers all at once. CIOs say regardless of the path to professional enterprise-wide imaging management positions, working closely with clinician leaders to educate and satisfy them is a necessity. No standard term has yet emerged industry-wide to refer to these professionals. Most are still called "PACS administrators," even as their responsibilities move beyond the bounds of the radiology department in patient care organizations.
