Mental illness, substance abuse, and criminal behavior.

During a 6-month period, 423 inmates were referred to the mental health services in an urban county jail. The data gathered indicate significant psychopathology and recidivism in the group. Mentally disordered inmates reported a rather high rate of positive family history of psychopathology. The study points out the need for extensive mental services in city and urban county jails.
