According to the reports of the United States National Bureau of Statistics regarding the prevalence of obesity among adults and children and also asthma outbreak, the relationship between asthma and obesity in developed countries is taken into consideration.
Relationship between body mass index and increased airway reactivity based on methacholine challenge test results.
It was a retrospective cross-sectional study done on 256 patients who were referred to the lung clinic of the Imam Khomeini Hospital of Ahvaz with symptoms of hypersensitivity of the airways. The patients, who had normal spirometry, were examined by the methacholine challenge test and then they were divided in two groups with positive and negative test results.
The patients of this study were 12-84 years old and their average age was 36.3 ±12.1 years. Their mean body mass index (BMI) was 28 ±4.7 kg/m in the group with positive methacholine and 26.7 ±4.9 kg/m in the group with negative methacholine ( = 0.04). It was shown that there has been a statistically significant relationship between BMI and positive methacholine challenge test results (apart from confounding effects of other variables). It seems that the positivity rate of methacholine test rises by 1.06 with an increase in BMI by each unit ( < 0.05).
According to the results of this study, it can be said that in high BMI there is a statistically significant association between gender (female) and a positive methacholine challenge test result; but there is no statistically significant association between the methacholine dose and BMI.

这是一项回顾性横断面研究,对256名因气道过敏症状转诊至阿瓦士伊玛目霍梅尼医院肺部诊所的患者进行了研究。对肺活量测定正常的患者进行乙酰甲胆碱激发试验,然后根据试验结果将他们分为阳性和阴性两组。
本研究中的患者年龄在12至84岁之间,平均年龄为36.3±12.1岁。乙酰甲胆碱试验阳性组的平均体重指数(BMI)为28±4.7kg/m²,阴性组为26.7±4.9kg/m²(P = 0.04)。结果表明,BMI与乙酰甲胆碱激发试验阳性结果之间存在统计学上的显著关系(排除其他变量的混杂影响)。似乎BMI每增加一个单位,乙酰甲胆碱试验的阳性率就会增加1.06(P<0.05)。
根据本研究结果,可以说在高BMI人群中,性别(女性)与乙酰甲胆碱激发试验阳性结果之间存在统计学上的显著关联;但乙酰甲胆碱剂量与BMI之间不存在统计学上的显著关联。
