Extreme reaction conditions lead to the synthesis of γ-P N . Its crystal structure, unlike that of the normal pressure modification α-P N , is not exclusively built from PN tetrahedra, but from both PN tetrahedra (blue) and tetragonal PN pyramids (red). A tetragonal PN pyramid structure element has not been observed previously.
