The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the limbal stem cells in corneal epithelial homeostasis in patients with peripheral corneal disease who received corneal transplantation surgery. This retrospective study enrolled 85 patients (85 eyes) with peripheral corneal lesion who underwent corneal transplantation at Department of Ophthalmology in First Hospital of Jilin University, Jilin, China. All patients during each follow-up period were examined for best corrected visual acuity, corneal reconstruction (assessed by slit-lamp biomicroscopy), anterior segment optical coherence tomography, and confocal microscopy. Patients were followed up for 3.5±2.4 years. All patients had improved postoperative best corrected visual acuity. Neither vascularization nor conjunctivalization of the graft occurred. Scanning of the graft was covered by normal corneal epithelium as confirmed on the laser scanning confocal microscopy. No evidence of normal limbal was detected in any of the operation eyes. The limbal stem cells may not play a critical role during normal corneal epithelial turnover in patients with peripheral corneal disease following corneal transplantation surgery.
本研究的目的是调查在接受角膜移植手术的周边角膜疾病患者中,角膜缘干细胞在角膜上皮稳态中的作用。这项回顾性研究纳入了85例(85只眼)患有周边角膜病变的患者,他们在中国吉林吉林大学第一医院眼科接受了角膜移植手术。在每个随访期内,对所有患者进行最佳矫正视力、角膜重建(通过裂隙灯显微镜检查评估)、眼前段光学相干断层扫描和共聚焦显微镜检查。患者随访了3.5±2.4年。所有患者术后最佳矫正视力均有提高。移植片未出现血管化或结膜化。激光扫描共聚焦显微镜检查证实移植片表面覆盖有正常角膜上皮。在任何手术眼中均未检测到正常角膜缘的证据。在角膜移植手术后的周边角膜疾病患者中,角膜缘干细胞在正常角膜上皮更新过程中可能不发挥关键作用。
