The current research seeks to assess the anti-atherogenic activity of Egyptian artichoke leaf extract in hypercholesterolemic rats.
Male albino rats were categorized into five groups; control group, high cholesterol diet treated group (HCD), HCD + low dose of artichoke, HCD + high dose of artichoke and HCD + Atorvastatin.
Both doses of artichoke extract significantly decreased the concentration of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C in HCD rats as compared to that of their matching controls, < .05. The treatment with artichoke led to the inhibition of the liver hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase. Besides, the extract was proven to be cardioprotective effective by increasing antioxidant activity. The effect of the highest dose of artichoke was more apparent than the effect of the lowest one. The biochemical data was reinforced by the histopathological studies.
Artichoke may act as a natural source for the elimination of cardiovascular ailments.

雄性白化大鼠分为五组;对照组、高胆固醇饮食组(HCD)、HCD+低剂量洋蓟、HCD+高剂量洋蓟和 HCD+阿托伐他汀。
与相应的对照组相比,两种剂量的洋蓟提取物均能显著降低 HCD 大鼠血清胆固醇、甘油三酯和 LDL-C 的浓度,<0.05。洋蓟提取物能抑制肝脏羟甲基戊二酰辅酶 A(HMG-CoA)还原酶。此外,该提取物通过增加抗氧化活性被证明具有心脏保护作用。最高剂量洋蓟的作用比最低剂量更明显。组织病理学研究证实了生化数据。
洋蓟可能是消除心血管疾病的天然来源。
