Six species of crab collected from coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, yielded extracts of water soluble toxins lethal to mice by i.p. injection. These species have not previously been reported as toxic. They are Phymodius ungulatus, Pilodius areolatus, Leptodius sanguineus (Xanthidae), Grapsus albolineatus (Grapsidae), Thalamita stimpsoni and Thalamita wakensis (Portunidae). Extracts of T. stimpsoni contained gonyautoxin-1.
