Abstract

Biomass-burning emissions are a significant source of primary organic aerosol (POA). Volatility is one of the most important physical properties of organic aerosol (OA). Dilution and thermodenuder (TD) measurements were used to investigate the volatility of POA from household crop waste combustion in China. Between 10% and 30% of the POA desorbed when diluted from 20:1 to 120:1, while 10%-40% of POA evaporated in the TD when heated to 150 °C. Thus, a considerable proportion of the POA emissions were volatile. A dynamic mass transfer model was applied to derived volatility distributions of POA based on TD data. A best fit volatility distributions for POA and associated mass accommodation coefficients (α), and the enthalpy of vaporization (ΔH) were presented. The emissions factors and volatility distribution of POA emission from household crop waste combustion in this study can be used to improve emission inventories and simulate gas-particle partitioning of organic aerosol in chemical transport models.
