This communication was adapted from a presentation at the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association, Asheville, NC, October 18, 1985. Because the professional concerns and status of the physical therapists of North Carolina are not unlike those of physical therapists in other parts of the United States, I was encouraged by my colleagues to share my thoughts and observations with the broad community of physical therapists. Although I am addressing North Carolina physical therapists specifically, my deeper concern is for our profession and its future course.
