This scoping review explores the antecedents and consequences of social media addiction, focusing on internal and external factors over the past five years. It highlights issues such as inconsistent conceptual definitions and measurement scales, which have hindered theoretical and practical progress in understanding social media addiction. The review addresses these gaps by consolidating findings from 58 studies conducted between 2018 and 2023, following Arksey and O'Malley's approach. The studies from databases like WOS, EBSCO, Scopus, CNKI, and Google Scholar examine social media antecedents and consequences. Of the 58 studies, 38 focus on internal factors such as personal motivation, personality traits, technological abilities, and external factors like social environment and upbringing. The remaining 20 studies explore the consequences, including the impact on personality traits and social activities. This comprehensive review offers a deeper understanding of social media addiction, paving the way for future research and theoretical developments.
