Both the incidence and the severity of herpes zoster increase with advancing age. Postherpetic neuralgia may persist for more than a year. Treatment is usually symptomatic, and early corticosteroid therapy should be considered in patients over age 50. Psychotropic drugs also may be indicated to overcome depression.
