Juxtapapillary hamartoma of the pigment epithelium and retina is a benign tumour, but its importance is derived from a possible misdiagnosis being made of choroidal melanoma. This, in fact, was the cause of enucleation in 5 out of the 19 cases reported. Previously reported cases are reviewed and two new cases described including ophthalmoscopic and angiographic characteristics. Differential diagnosis with other pigmented papillary tumours, mainly melanocytoma and choroidal melanoma, is discussed.
