Two groups of climacteric women, 38 with symptoms and 39 without, were compared by means of a detailed analysis of their life history, personality, roles and psychosomatic reaction tendency. The results indicate that climacteric women may be classified into physical and psychosomatic reactors with different degrees of vulnerability and resilience. The characteristics of each group are described and the necessity for different treatment is outlined.
