In the human oral mucosa, glycogen particles of beta-configuration are mostly located in the spinous cells, being, however, scanty in the basal and superficial cells. The particles situated near the Golgi apparatus, are covered with a trilaminar unit membrane, and some of them are seen to be membrane-continuous with the Golgi cisterns. Intermingled with the typical glycogen particles, smaller particles are encountered, thus implying the earlier stages on the mature glycogen particle formation.
