Herpes zoster is a common clinical illness, with acute and chronic pain a major feature. Antiviral agents started within 72 hours of the onset of the rash are effective in the acute illness and in post herpetic neuralgia or zoster associated pain. Newer agents offer advantages in efficacy and dosage convenience.
