Abstract

From the viewpoint of the American Medical Association's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, a physician may not ethically refuse to treat a patient solely because the patient is infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Nonetheless, reports of recent surveys indicate that a sizable number of physicians are, in fact, refusing to care for HIV-infected patients.
