In his discussion of the microbiological aspects of irradiation sterilization, the author examines the effects of irradiation on microbial populations and describes how sterility is assured and sterilization is achieved as well as the factors affecting lethality. Microbial response to radiation depends not on the dose rate but is influenced by the innate characteristics of the microorganisms and the physical or chemical conditions or agents existing within the cells or their immediate environment. Many external factors, including the effects of oxygen, water, other chemical agents, and temperature can protect or sensitize microorganisms from or to lethal radiation-induced damage.
