Rising health care costs, a larger number of physicians competing for staff privileges, and increasing liability for hospitals involved in malpractice cases are changing the relationships between hospitals and medical staffs. In this article, two important changes are discussed: the physician applying for medical staff privileges faces greater scrutiny than in the past, and in the future, more and more hospitals may seek to make physicians employees on closed medical staffs.
