[C]ritics of modern obstetric practices have taken note of the ways in which increased diagnostic surveillance can change the character and mood of pregnancy, and they have urged special caution about increased prenatal genetic testing. This paper explores these issues and suggests the need for national standards articulating criteria for introducing and funding new genetic tests as a part of normal prenatal care.
