Estimation of the number of persons at advanced ages from the number of deaths at each age in the given year and adjacent years.

"In this article the rate of increase of the population at each age is estimated from the rate of increase in the number of deaths, and in this way a close approximation of the number of older persons at each age is derived from the accurately recorded number of deaths in three consecutive years centered on the year in question.
