"This work studies the importance of family [relationships] among slaves in Bananal (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the early nineteenth century. Additionally, it examines the effects on the slave family of the introduction and growth of [the] coffee plantation occurring in that region....[It is concluded] that the slave family in Bananal had a cyclical evolution, according to the genesis and development of [the] coffee plantation. Manuscript censuses, especially for the years 1801, 1817 and 1829, are the primary sources on which the analysis is based." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
