The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2001 set a national goal of a 50% reduction in new HIV infections by 2005, which would mean 130,000 fewer HIV infections. That would mean a health care cost savings of $18.5 billion, a new study shows. On the flip side, there are no signs that new HIV infection rates have been reduced at all in the past two years, and there is some evidence they may be increasing.
