Amiodarone, an iodine -- rich benzofurane derivate, is a highly effective agent for the prophylaxis and treatment of various cardiac arrhythmias, but it is associated with numerous side effects. Aim of this study was to elucidate dermatological adverse effects of therapy with amiodarone. Patients (n=468, mean age 48.7+/-0.7 years) receiving oral amiodarone were followed-up for 1-134 months (mean 20.85+/-1.2 months). Photosensitivity was quite common (41.4%). Spectrum of skin reactions was wide, ranging from erythema and swelling of area exposed to sunshine. Some patients (0.8%) developed pigmentation of the exposed skin areas.
