This article explores the phenomenon of consumerism in healthcare from an evolutionary perspective and with a view to understanding its implications on the future of our industry. Drawing from the perspectives of leading industry thought leaders and CIOs, it explores the strategic drivers moving our industry toward consumerism and the operational and information technology implications of that trend. By blending real-life examples with potential scenarios, the article is designed to provoke thinking regarding the challenges and opportunities presented by consumerism, thereby informing strategic planning efforts.
