Abstract

An adult male patient with probable ectopic ACTH production by a medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, was studied before and after bilateral adrenalectomy. Pre-operatively, the patient had low plasma testosterone levels that returned to normal after surgery. The clinical course and study of the patient showed that, 1) chronic excess of ACTH may lower plasma testosterone levels in man, and 2) that this may be mediated through its effect on the adrenals.

一名成年男性患者可能因甲状腺髓样癌产生异位促肾上腺皮质激素（ACTH），在双侧肾上腺切除术前和术后接受了研究。术前，患者血浆睾酮水平较低，术后恢复正常。该患者的临床病程及研究表明，1）长期ACTH过量可能会降低男性的血浆睾酮水平，2）这可能是通过其对肾上腺的作用介导的。
