We explain an approach to motion detection based on the biological vision system of the common house fly, Musca domestica. Basing a machine vision system on the house fly has distinct advantages when compared to the limiting properties of current computer vision systems. The advantages of this approach will also be explained by comparing motion detection using overlapping Gaussian profiles to the traditional elementary motion detector proposed by Reichardt.
