Fractures of the distal radius and ulna are common, and methods of obtaining pain relief prior to their reduction include general anesthesia, intravenous regional anesthesia, and local infiltration of the fracture hematoma (hematoma block). A prospective study of 132 distal forearm fractures treated with hematoma block was undertaken. This group was compared with a control group of 100 patients who had had either general anesthesia or intravenous regional anesthesia. Results revealed no incidence of infection in either group. If appropriate precautions are taken, hematoma block does not increase the risk of infection.
