Venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism, is a common illness during postoperative period. Pharmacological antithrombotic therapy is the cornerstone for the treatment of venous thromboembolism. However, management of venous thromboembolism during postoperative period can be challenging, because of increased risk of bleeding associated with antithrombotic agents. Therefore, we should devise a strategy with mechanical support such as catheter intervention, inferior vena cava filter and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support during the period with increased bleeding risk.
