The progression and manifestations of arthritis can to a large extent be controlled by medical measures. In the instance of inflammatory arthritis surgical synovectomy may have to be undertaken to control the disease. Once the arthritis has resulted in significant damage to the joints surgical intervention may be the only means of providing relief of pain and restoring function to the affected limb. Arthroplasty, arthrodesis, debridement and osteotomy remain the most used surgical procedures to achieve this.

关节炎的进展和表现很大程度上可以通过医学手段加以控制。对于炎性关节炎，可能不得不进行手术滑膜切除术来控制病情。一旦关节炎对关节造成了严重损害，手术干预可能是缓解疼痛和恢复患肢功能的唯一方法。关节成形术、关节固定术、清创术和截骨术仍然是实现这一目标最常用的外科手术。
