The multiple physiological effects of steroid hormones are mediated by the cognate nuclear receptors through transcriptional regulation of target gene expression. Recently, post-transcriptional modifications of steroid receptors and cross-talk between steroid hormone signaling with other signaling pathways have been found to play a pivotal role in cell- and gene-specific transcriptional regulation. This is a brief overview on the role of interaction with different transcriptional factors and specific post-translational modifications (phosphorylation, acetylation and ubiquitination) of nuclear receptors in defining the physiological outcome of steroid hormone action.
