The methylphenidate transdermal system (MTS) is a novel formulation of methylphenidate, a psychostimulant, in an adhesive-based matrix transdermal system (patch) that is applied to intact skin. This is deliverable in a transdermal patch for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders.
This paper seeks to review the supporting data for the use of the MTS patch, including its efficacy, safety and other considerations in its use.
Clinical studies using MTS are reviewed.
RESULTS/CONCLUSION: The MTS patch shows similar levels of efficacy and safety as other methylphenidate formulations and stimulants, although the time to onset of effects may be longer. The patch delivery system allows for flexibility in the duration of effect and reduced reliance on oral administration.
