The cartilage anchor is a cartilagineous strip inserted subcutaneously in front of the nasolabial fold which allows precise forming and movement of the nasolabial fold in facial palsy. It is taken from ear cartilage. Static and dynamic symmetry can be improved considerably by fixing a free microvascular muscle transplant or a sling plasty to the cartilage anchor. In cases of significant laxity of the paralysed side of the face, the combination of muscle transplant and sling plasty may be helpful.
