[Acceptance rate of miniscrew application during orthodontic treatment].

PURPOSE

To evaluate patients' acceptance of miniscrew application during orthodontic treatment by questionnaire-based investigation.

METHODS

Twenty-eight female adult patients with Class I molar relationship and bimaxillary protrusion were subjected to orthodontic treatment involving the insertion of 4 miniscrews between the second premolars and first molars. A questionnaire was designed according to the key points about the pre-, middle and post- miniscrew application to assess to what extent the miniscrews was accepted.

RESULTS

57% patients accepted such procedure, but most patients were concerned about whether it was painful during the surgical procedure. 96% patients had asked their orthodontist, and 89% patients showed their concern before miniscrew application. 93% patients wanted to see photographs and video or talk with other patients who had undergone miniscrew insertion prior to the surgical procedure. After insertion of the miniscrews, 79% patients showed no discomfort during the insertion procedure. 96% patients took less than 7 days to get used to the miniscrews. After the removal of miniscrews, 89% patients were satisfied with the treatment results and willing to recommend this treatment with miniscrews to the other patients.

CONCLUSIONS

The miniscrews could be accepted by most patients and have a good treatment result. But before miniscrew insertion, patiens have a lot of concerns about this procedure.
