To analyze the scientific literature about the physiology and effects of exercises used in the treatment of oral myofunctional disorders.
The methodology used followed the concepts of the Cochrane Handbook and involved question formulation related to the topic of investigation, identification and selection of the studies, and a critical evaluation of the selected articles.
Papers were selected on PubMed database using the following keyword combinations: "physiology exercise AND speech, language and hearing science", "exercise physiology AND speech therapy", "exercise physiology AND myofunctional therapy", and "physiology exercise AND swallowing therapy". Only papers written in English and published between the years of 2000 and 2010 were included in the analysis.
Manuscripts were analyzed according to their objectives, research design, participants, inclusion of a control group, assessment criteria, therapeutic proposal, results and existence about physiology of the chosen exercises.
One hundred and eight studies were identified, out of which 38 had access to the full text and were directly related to the investigated topic. The articles were classified as clinical trials and experimental research, case studies, literature reviews and theoretical articles, letters to the editor and critical analyses.
This review concluded that there is a lack of knowledge about the effects of the myofunctional exercises used by clinicians. Also there is a lack of scientific evidence to determine the frequency at which they should be performed. Generally, the articles investigate the efficacy of treatment programs without inquiring whether the included exercises are individually effective.

所采用的方法遵循Cochrane手册的概念，涉及与调查主题相关的问题制定、研究的识别与选择，以及对所选文章的批判性评价。
在PubMed数据库中使用以下关键词组合选择论文：“运动生理学与言语、语言和听力科学”、“运动生理学与言语治疗”、“运动生理学与肌功能治疗”以及“运动生理学与吞咽治疗”。分析仅纳入2000年至2010年间发表的英文论文。
根据手稿的目标、研究设计、参与者、是否纳入对照组、评估标准、治疗方案、结果以及所选运动的生理学依据进行分析。
共识别出108项研究，其中38项可获取全文且与调查主题直接相关。这些文章分为临床试验与实验研究、案例研究、文献综述与理论文章、给编辑的信以及批判性分析。
本综述得出结论，临床医生对所使用的肌功能运动的效果缺乏了解。此外，缺乏科学证据来确定进行这些运动的频率。总体而言，这些文章研究了治疗方案的疗效，但未探究其中所包含的运动是否各自有效。
