Dr. Abel is the associate dean for community and professional initiatives, School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. From 1991 through 1998, he served as the director of Dentistry, Spellman Center for HIV-Related Disease, New York City, the first HIV-dedicated dental clinic in the United States. Dr. Abel served on President Clinton's Advisory Council for HIV/AIDS, the first dentist to hold such an appointment.
