In Scotland, carcinoma of the prostate is now the third most common malignancy in males. The disease is only curable if removed or irradiated when confined to the prostate but has usually spread beyond the prostate when the diagnosis is made. This article reviews the clinical presentation, diagnostic and staging methods and current treatment available for this common clinical problem.
