The increased understanding of the mechanisms leading to production of renal hypertension, and in particular the recognition of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis as an integrated capacity-volume system for the control of arterial blood pressure, now allows a rational approach to the diagnosis and management of patients suffering from this disease. In this brief review some of the experimental evidence behind this rational approach is presented.
