SUN: Short-Lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform Headache Attacks.

PREMISE

Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks (SUN) are part of the group of primary headaches called trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs). They are characterized by unilateral attacks of pain with associated ipsilateral cranial autonomic symptoms.

PROBLEM

Recently the classification of these attacks has changed, to incorporate the different types of autonomic symptoms such as conjunctival injection and tearing (or lack thereof). Previously considered to be rare and rather refractory to treatment, there is an increasing awareness of this syndrome and the therapeutic possibilities.

DISCUSSION

This article discusses the clinical aspects of the syndrome, pathophysiology, current, and future treatments.
