The purpose of this article is to familiarize the clinician with six major categories of cardiovascular medications. Each category includes a description of the agents available, clinical indications for treatment, clinical pharmacology, and side effects. It is expected that the information gained by the therapist will enhance both evaluation and treatment program planning and implementation for individuals with one of the following: a primary diagnosis of cardiovascular disease or a primary diagnosis being treated with physical therapy (such as a neurologic or orthopedic disorder) and a secondary diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. Three case studies are presented to exemplify the importance of a thorough chart review, evaluation, and treatment program implementation and modification, in conjunction with the cardiovascular medications used in each case.
