Fabrication of a customized cuirass for patients with severe thoracic asymmetry.

We describe the fabrication of customized cuirasses for patients with severe thoracic asymmetry who need assisted ventilation. The materials and methods for this technique are available in most hospital-based or commercial orthotics laboratories. The degree of innovation required for fabrication should be within the capabilities of most certified orthotists. This specialized application is highly effective in selected patients, as reported by us and other investigators.
