This paper discusses the paradoxes which become evident in the course of outpatient treatment of some adolescents. The resistance to treatment, the nature of therapeutic communication, the handling of countertransference feelings, and the view of the adolescent as victim are described. In addition the use of isolation by adolescents and its effect on therapy is discussed.
