This supplement reports the characters of 28 new Salmonella serovars recognized in 1986 by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Salmonella: 14 serovars belong to subspecies, I, 5 to subspecies II, 2 to subspecies IIIa, 4 to subspecies IIIb and 3 to subspecies IV. One serovar formerly considered as "atypical subspecies I" and 8 as "atypical subspecies II" are now classified in the new subspecies VI.
