This study aims to evaluate the relationship between chronic sinusitis (CRS) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in a Chinese population and to explore the risk factors for olfactory dysfunction in patients with CRS.
A total of 387 CRS patients were enrolled. Olfactory function was assessed by the Sniffin' Sticks 12-item test and MS was diagnosed according to the guidelines. Logistic regression analysis was performed on CRS patients to screen independent risk factors of olfactory dysfunction, adjusted for confounding factors.
Among 387 patients, average age of visit and duration of onset were 48.7 years and 1.8 years, respectively. The prevalence of MS was 15.0%. CRS patients with MS were more likely to be older (51.2 vs. 46.8, = .004), predominantly male ( < .001) and have a higher proportion of olfactory dysfunction (62.1% vs. 44.1%, = .018) than those without MS. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, MS was associated with olfactory dysfunction in CRS patients (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.14-3.72, = .016). This association remained significant after controlling for confounding factors. In addition, nasal polyps (OR: 13.41, 95% CI: 8.11-22.17, < .001) and allergic rhinitis (OR: 3.16, 95% CI: 1.67-5.99, < .001) were also risk factors for olfactory dysfunction after adjusting for confounding factors.
MS is associated with olfactory dysfunction in patients with CRS. MS, nasal polyps, and allergic rhinitis are risk factors for olfactory dysfunction in CRS patients.

本研究旨在评估中国人群中慢性鼻窦炎(CRS)与代谢综合征(MS)之间的关系,并探讨CRS患者嗅觉功能障碍的危险因素。
共纳入387例CRS患者。采用嗅棒12项测试评估嗅觉功能,并根据指南诊断MS。对CRS患者进行逻辑回归分析,以筛选嗅觉功能障碍的独立危险因素,并对混杂因素进行校正。
387例患者的平均就诊年龄和发病时长分别为48.7岁和1.8年。MS的患病率为15.0%。与无MS的CRS患者相比,患有MS的CRS患者年龄更大(51.2岁对46.8岁,P = 0.004),男性居多(P < 0.001),且嗅觉功能障碍的比例更高(62.1%对44.1%,P = 0.018)。在多变量逻辑回归分析中,MS与CRS患者的嗅觉功能障碍相关(比值比:2.06,95%置信区间:1.14 - 3.72,P = 0.016)。在控制混杂因素后,这种关联仍然显著。此外,在校正混杂因素后,鼻息肉(比值比:13.41,95%置信区间:8.11 - 22.17,P < 0.001)和变应性鼻炎(比值比:3.16,95%置信区间:(1.67 - 5.99,P < 0.001)也是嗅觉功能障碍的危险因素。
