The effect of verapamil on luteinizing hormone secretion by pituitary body was studied in normal and castrated male and female rats. Intragastric verapamil administration at a dose of 10 mg/g body weight two hours prior to decapitation decreased luteinizing hormone serum and pituitary levels in female rats only in proestrus. It is suggested that preovulatory luteinizing hormone secretion depends partially on estradiol-stimulated calcium transport.
