To describe nurses' experiences of the quality of family-centred patient counselling in paediatric delirium.
A qualitative descriptive study.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 PICU nurses with experience in managing paediatric patients at high risk of developing delirium. The data were analysed inductively.
The study identified four main categories, 10 generic categories, and 34 specific subcategories within family-centered patient counselling in paediatric delirium, offering a comprehensive framework to enhance counselling practices for families in paediatric delirium care.
The study highlights areas to improve family-centered patient counselling in paediatric delirium, particularly focusing on sufficiency, resources, and implementation. It emphasises the need for improved delirium-related knowledge among healthcare providers. The study also suggests that digital services, such as websites and digital care pathways, can improve information access for families, enhancing the family-centeredness of counselling.
