Abstract

BACKGROUND

In recent years, the role of grit in second language (L2) acquisition has begun to attract scholarly interest, but the results of previous studies have been inconsistent. Moreover, with the rapid flowering of positive psychology, the well-being of L2 students and its effect on L2 learning have also come under scrutiny, but existing research has been fragmentary, especially lacking in studies on the effect of well-being on L2 achievement.

METHOD

Based on a questionnaire survey among 343 English major freshmen in a Chinese university, this study explored the predictive effect of “perseverance of effort” (PE) and “consistency of interest”(CI) ‒ the two dimensions of grit ‒ on the learners’ L2 achievement, and the possible mediating roles of the five elements of well-being (i.e., positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment) in the relationship between the two dimensions of grit and L2 achievement.

RESULTS

The findings revealed that PE had no predictive effect on learners’ L2 achievement while CI had significant and positive predictive effect on the latter, and that the mediating effect of well-being was statistically non-significant.

CONCLUSION

The results indicated that L2 students’ consistent interest in and enthusiasm toward L2 learning should be cultivated, and that an L2-specific well-being scale should be developed in order to better reveal the relationships between grit, well-being and L2 achievement.

近年来,毅力在第二语言(L2)习得中的作用开始引起学界关注,但以往研究结果并不一致。此外,随着积极心理学的迅速兴起,二语学习者的幸福感及其对二语学习的影响也受到了审视,但现有研究较为零散,尤其缺乏关于幸福感对二语成绩影响的研究。

方法

本研究基于对中国一所大学343名英语专业大一新生的问卷调查,探讨了毅力的两个维度——“努力坚持”(PE)和“兴趣一致性”(CI)对学习者二语成绩的预测作用,以及幸福感的五个要素(即积极情绪、投入、人际关系、意义和成就)在毅力的两个维度与二语成绩之间关系中可能的中介作用。

结果

研究结果显示,PE对学习者的二语成绩没有预测作用,而CI对二语成绩有显著的正向预测作用,且幸福感的中介作用在统计学上不显著。

结论

研究结果表明,应培养二语学习者对二语学习持续的兴趣和热情,并且应开发专门针对二语学习的幸福感量表,以便更好地揭示毅力、幸福感和二语成绩之间的关系。
